Why do so few scientists make significant contributions and so many are forgotten in the long run? - "You and Your Research" - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=52337 - Sept 2007 (11 comments)
Note for anyone wondering: reposts are ok after a year or so (https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html). I'll play the "or so" card and call this one ok. In addition to it being good for curiosity to revisit perennials sometimes (just not too often), HN is also a place for junior cohorts to have the pleasure of encountering the classics for the first time—an important function of the site!
Also a perennial is comments linking the videos/books... They have to because the page hasn't been updated in >21 years! (It's also increasingly ugly, and would benefit from explanation of the increasingly obscure references that may have made plenty of sense to Bell Lab people in 1986 but don't know - did you know he meant Unix by 'the computer in the attic'? I sure didn't.)
