"returns"

Editor not doing their job.

[–]PanningForSalt 409 points410 points  (5 children)

Proofreader's job, not the editor. The editor's job is to fire the proofreaders to save money.

[–]nkonkleksp 68 points69 points  (2 children)

ahh economics

[–]polyworfism 27 points28 points  (1 child)

You don't have to outrun the bear budget cuts, just your friends proofreader

[–]WilligerWilly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not the beer cuts!

[–]canttaketheshyfrommecommas are IMPORTANT 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Proofreader's

"Copy Editor," a position so dead and buried we've forgotten what it was called.

[–]PanningForSalt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha maybe actually, I'm just reciting a rant I heard from some newspaper people

[–]pottymouthgrl 154 points155 points  (17 children)

Also the lack of punctuation and the show name should be italicized

[–]Seboya_ 17 points18 points  (7 children)

I thought show names are in quotes

[–]QR63 51 points52 points  (4 children)

Probably depends on the style, but I’ve definitely learned to italicize show names and put individual episode names in quotes.

[–]Seboya_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're prolly right. Depends on which style you're using.

[–]deaddonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s up to the publication and depends on the style they choose to use.

[–]pottymouthgrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen that show names are italicized when typing and in quotes when hand writing because you can’t italicize handwriting well

[–]KewpieDan 16 points17 points  (7 children)

What punctuation is missing?

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (3 children)

Idk but why is Stephen Merchant touching comedians very quickly?

[–]vice_is_nice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It appears that if he touches them very quickly, the comedian turns to gold.

[–]KewpieDan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hehe

[–]Dismal-Eye6555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Midas touch?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m really not sure. Hoping the other commenter answers.

[–]pottymouthgrl 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Commas around the show name because it’s an aside

[–]KewpieDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, nobody does that and it doesn't need it, especially if it's already italicised. "BBC comedy The Outlaws" is a single unit.

[–]juddplays 40 points41 points  (8 children)

what's the issue with returns? am I being a dummy?

[–]kelby810 76 points77 points  (3 children)

"As (TV show) sees (actor) and (actor) returns to our screens,"

[–]juddplays 29 points30 points  (2 children)

i was a dummy all along! thanks

[–]phlooo 29 points30 points  (2 children)

[This comment was removed by a script.]

[–]juddplays 7 points8 points  (1 child)

ohhh i was being dummy. cheers.

[–]SolsKing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"subject-verb agreement" as they call it...

[–]chickenstalker99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pressman not doing much better. Shit's so badly out of register.

[–]RamblingSimian 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Wait, are people who understand grammar allowed on Reddit?

[–]lordatlas 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You could of fooled me.

[–]iguanamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your not kidding. Their everywhere.

[–]itsH5And then I discovered Wingdings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They probably didn’t like it and was force to say it was good— looks subliminal to me.

[–]Keithustusplz recycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More subreddits need comments that correct content go to the top.

[–]InNeedOfABetterName -3 points-2 points  (8 children)

I think it's a plural noun, not a misspelled verb, as in a "Stephen Merchant return" is seen as a type of return. Then when the two are combined, "return" becomes plural.

That is correct grammatically, no? I'm not a native speaker though, so please correct me if i'm wrong. :)

[–]MaliciousPorpoise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In that case I think there has to be an indicator of possession to show the "returns" belong to Christopher Walken and Stephen merchant, so "Christopher Walken's and Stephen Merchant's returns" and even then it still sounds a bit off to me even if there's nothing technically wrong with it.

The original just sounds extremely clumsy.

If I wanted to say it I'd probably rearrange it to something like "The hit TV show The Outlaws sees the return of Stephen Merchant and Christopher Walken."

Edit: Or maybe just "Christopher Walken and Stephen Merchant's returns."

[–]SuperVegaSaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sentence starts with 'as.' Returns is a verb. They would have to change other words to make it a noun, eg:

'Hit TV show x sees Joe's and Jim's returns; creator Bob talks to Bad Newspaper.'

[–]Seb555 0 points1 point  (4 children)

It could be, but that feels really clunky and a bad subject/verb match seems more likely to me. If I were writing this I would avoid this just for the potential confusion that everyone in this thread is having.

[–]SuperVegaSaurus 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It could not be. It isn't clunky but definitely incorrect as written.

[–]Seb555 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I checked with an English teacher and she said it’s nontraditional but absolutely possible. Just very confusing in this case and a bad choice

[–]InNeedOfABetterName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what i was thinking as well

[–]SnapClapplePop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it, that would require 's to be affixed to either the last or both names to signify the presence of a noun. That may have been the original intent, but it's still wrong.

[–]threepacz -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Y’all are nerds, you know that right?

[–]MaliciousPorpoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subreddit is literally called crappydesign and you're surprised people are commenting on things being wrong and/or crappy? xD

[–]35Lcrowww 379 points380 points  (5 children)

They knew

[–]USERNAME___PASSWORD 36 points37 points  (4 children)

It’s accurate either way

[–]PanningForSalt 26 points27 points  (3 children)

Not at all, it's a good programme

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I loved it.

[–]mike_pants 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Fun fact: It's the only TV show so far that has destroyed a Banksy.

[–]PanningForSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But not the first Banksy piece that was created to be destroyed.

[–][deleted] 211 points212 points  (5 children)

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed lol

[–]Anra7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. I thought the joke was about touching comedians. :(

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That quickly turns to gold.

[–]toddweaver 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Probably more accurate this way..

[–]Successful_Goose_348 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Once when I worked at a lifestyle magazine the caption for a restaurant review under a motion blurred photo of busy waiters carrying plates past each other accidentally got printed as, “the staff at Equus shits like racehorses”

[–]SuperVegaSaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man I'd love to see that.

[–]andyrice11 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What was it supposed to be?

[–]Successful_Goose_348 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Shifts”

[–]Bennings463 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He's done you again, Steve!

[–]RageCageJables 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Stephen Merchant and Christopher Walken have a show together? That's great news!

[–]Confused-Cup 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Omg that was awful i apologise lol

[–]RageCageJables 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]MichaelMyersFanClub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ITT Dozens of people stating the obvious.

[–]chain_letter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a confusing mistake, some reader might see the drop cap and think they're not saying it's shit.

[–]TheKingOfApples 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Wtf is "as hit" why are they starting the sentence like that?

[–]Derek_Boring_Name 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The shitty grammar made it almost incomprehensible, but it’s saying “as the hit show returns, we talked to the creator”

[–]Glasprinzessin 2 points3 points  (1 child)

A shit

[–]Cold_Piece_4933 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ash it

[–]LawlessCoffeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if they actually hate it and are trying to drop subtle hints.

[–]DionisioDandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stephen Merchant is the goat, tho.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is the first letter always big?

[–]rolfw93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Writing the first letter of any article so big was a crappy design in the first place and also totally unnecessary. Never quite understood why people do this, it doesn't grab your attention and it also looks like a s hit

[–]Chevy_65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait. Stephen Merchant and Christopher Walken? Where is this??

[–]UnderKoverCatboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A shit

[–]JustTheSameUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a side note, The Outlaws is fucking amazing! Ive rewatched it too many times. Christopher Walken and Stephen Merchant are 2 of my favourites. Highly recommend

Unfortunate, you say?

[–]jermo1972 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[–]leon_scm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't say it's bad design, if they do this for every article, it would be weird leaving it out only for that one.

[–]TheMatt561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]FantasticCube_YT -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I legitemately (sorry if I spelled that wrong lol) thought this read "A shit BBC comedy" for a second

[–]lewabwee -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

I haven’t seen it but that seems true to me for anything with Stephen Merchant in it. I find his personality more intolerable than Ricky Gervais’.

[–]ElizaIsEpic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like his comedy for the most part (may just be biased because he voiced a character in Portal 2 lmao) but he is friends with Gervais I believe (iirc, correct me if I'm wrong), so that explains a bit lol
